In a Canvas course, the left-hand navigation can be customized by an instructor. Additional links can be added for items such as an extra resources page, a useful website, or direct access to a critical assignment for the course.
If a pre-existing Canvas course is imported into a new semester version of the same course, the customized left-hand navigation links no longer work in the new course.
Note: This article is only about customized links to items in the Canvas course, like a page made that lists all the components of a semester-long project, or a link to an actual Canvas assignment. If a customized link access something outside of Canvas, such as an external website, you won't need to fix anything. Just be sure to proof your links before you publish your course.
If customized links in the new course lead to an error, these links must be removed and then manually re-installed. Here are the instructions for fixing these imported customized links:
EXAMINE A CUSTOMIZED LINK IN THE ORIGINAL COURSE
In the original course, determine and confirm what item a customized link accesses. Click the customized link and make a note as to which page, assignment, discussion, or other learning activity it jumps to.
REMOVE FROM VIEW THE BROKEN LINKS IN THE LEFT-HAND NAVIGATION OF THE NEW COURSE
Return to the new Canvas course with the broken customized links.
In the left-hand navigation, click SETTINGS.
From the option tabs along the top of the content window, select NAVIGATION.
In the top section that lists navigation links that are visible to students, find the broken links and remove them from view.
Finish by clicking the SAVE button at the bottom of the window.
DELETE THE CONFIGURATION FOR BROKEN LINKS
From the option tabs at the top of the window, select APPS.
Then, find and click the button labeled VIEW APP CONFIGURATIONS.
In the list of configurations that appears, find each of the broken customized links and from the gear icon to the right of its name, choose the DELETE function.
RE-INSTALL THE CUSTOMIZED LINKS IN THE NEW COURSE
Now that the broken customized links have been removed from the left-hand navigation in the new course, you must re-install the customized links. Refer to the notes you took when examining the configuration of the customized links in the original course. The following set of instructions guides you through the procedure to create a new customized link:
